In these proceedings, we discuss the role of heavy quark mass on the formation of parton showers. Mass effects are not well understood when parton branching occurs in nuclear matter, such as the quark-gluon plasma. Recently, a theoretically consistent picture of open heavy flavor production in ultra relativistic nuclear collisions has begun to emerge based on effective theories of QCD, such as soft collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons. Microstructural evolution during quenching and partitioning of 0.2C-1.5Mn-1.3Si steels with Cr or Ni additions

Here, the influence of Cr and Ni additions and quench and partition (Q&P) processing parameters on the microstructural development, including carbide formation and austenite retention during Q&P, was studied in two steels with a base composition of 0.2C-1.5Mn-1.3Si wt.% and additions of 1.5 wt.% Cr (1.5Cr) or Ni (1.5Ni). Additions of 1.5 wt.% Cr significantly slowed the kinetics of austenite decomposition relative to the 1.5Ni alloy at all partitioning temperatures, promoting greater austenite retention, lower retained austenite carbon (C) contents, and reduced sensitivity of the retained austenite amounts to processing variables. Quantitative investigation into the influence of temperature on carbide and austenite evolution during partitioning of a quenched and partitioned steel

Here, the influence of partitioning temperature on microstructural evolution during quenching and partitioning was investigated in a 0.38C-1.54Mn-1.48Si wt.% steel using Mössbauer spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. η-carbide formation occurs in the martensite during the quenching, holding, and partitioning steps. More effective carbon partitioning from martensite to austenite was observed at 450 than 400°C, resulting in lower martensite carbon contents, less carbide formation, and greater retained austenite amounts for short partitioning times. Conversely, greater austenite decomposition occurs at 450°C for longer partitioning times. Lastly, cementite forms during austenite decomposition and in the martensite for longer partitioning times at 450°C.

Evidence for Hot, Bulk QCD Matter and Quenching of Jets at RHIC

Results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) depict formation of a hot, dense system at an energy density greater than 5 GeV/fm3, well above that where hadrons exist. The measured relative particle abundances are reproduced by statistical-thermal models with a temperature and baryo-chemical potential at the quark-hadron phase boundary predicted by lattice QCD. Jet quenching as a probe of the phases of QCD in relativistic nuclear collisions

We investigate the energy loss of gluon and quark jets in quark-gluon plasma produced in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy ({radical}(s{sub NN})=200 GeV). We use the effective quasiparticle model for investigation of physical characteristics of initial and mixed phases in expanding plasma. In the present work we calculate the quenching weight, i.e., the probability of medium-induced gluon radiation. We show that suppression of {pi}{sup 0} spectra is described correctly by quasiparticle model with increase of running coupling in the region of phase transition (at T{yields}T{sub c} from above) in agreement with recent lattice calculations and with PHENIX data.
