International Simple Glass - a six oxide borosilicate glass selected by the international nuclear glass community to improve the understanding of glass corrosion mechanisms and kinetics - was altered at 90°C in a solution initially saturated with respect to amorphous 29-SiO2. Assessment of glass dissolution kinetics, under disposal relevant temperature and pH environments, is required to credibly estimate radionuclide release rates from vitrified radioactive waste. Leaching of the International Simple Glass (ISG) under acidic to hyperalkaline conditions was examined. Forward rate measurements have been obtained using the dynamic leaching SPFT protocol and rate parameters for B, Na and Si in the basic regime; errors in rates predicted using these parameters at high pH and temperature are significant because the fitting uses logarithmic data. Spectroscopic ellipsometry study of thickness and porosity of the alteration layer formed on international simple glass surface in aqueous corrosion conditions

The porosity and pore-size distribution in the glass play an important role in glass corrosion; however, such information is difficult to be obtained non-destructively. Here we report the use of spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) under controlled humidity environments to determine those structural parameters in the alteration layers formed on international simple glass (ISG), a model nuclear waste glass, in aqueous corrosion conditions. The SE results show that the ISG sample corroded for nearly 4.5 years develops pores larger than 2 nm in diameter, while the alteration layers formed initially in less than 1 month do not have such large pores. Direct kinetic and mechanistic study of the OH/sup +/ dimethylsulfide reaction under atmospheric conditions

The authors employed a pulsed laser photolysis - pulsed laser induced fluorescence technique to carry out direct, real time studies of OH reactions with DMS and DMS-d/sub 6/ in N/sub 2/, air and O/sub 2/ buffer gases. Both temperature and pressure dependencies have been investigated. They find that the observed rate constant (K/sub obs/ identical to d(OH)/(OH)(DMS)dt) depends on the O/sub 2/ concentration. The results are consistent with a mechanism which includes an abstraction route, a reversible addition route, and an adduct + O/sub 2/ reaction which competes with adduct decomposition under atmospheric conditions.
Laboratory studies of gasification kinetics for western coals under conditions expected during ''in situ'' conversion

Kinetics for the reaction of steam with western subbituminous chars are described for operating conditions characteristic of those expected during underground gasification of these coals. The mineral matter present in these coals has been found to have significant catalytic activity for the water-gas-shift reaction. In addition, the inorganic constituents of brackish waters naturally occurring in aquifers in the West have been found to have little effect on the gasification rates.
