The syntheses of the water-soluble, chelating phosphines 1,2-bis(bis(hydroxybutyl)phosphino)ethane (1, n = 3; DHBuPE) and 1,2-bis(bis(hydroxypentyl)phosphino)ethane (1, n = 4; DHPePE) are reported. These ligands (and, in general, other 1,2-bis(bis(hydroxyalkyl)phosphino)ethane ligands) can be used to impact water solubility of metal complexes. As examples of this, the [Ni(DHPrPE){sub 2}Cl]Cl (2), [Rh(DHPrPE){sub 2}][Cl] (3), and [Ru-(DHBuPE){sub 2}Cl{sub 2}][Cl] (4) complexes were synthesized; they are indeed soluble in water (>0.5 M). The two new heterometallic Ru(II)-tpy/ferrocene complexes [Ru(tpy)Cl2(mtefc)] (1) and [Ru(tpy)Cl2(mtpfc)] (2) (where tpy = 2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine, mtefc = (2-(methylthio)ethyl)ferrocene, and mtpfc = (3-(methylthio)propyl)ferrocene) have been synthesized and then characterized through elemental analysis, followed by various spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis, 1D and 2D NMR) and mass spectrometric techniques (MALDI TOF and ESI Q-TOF MS). UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and viscometry were employed to study the interactions of the complexes 1 and 2 with calf thymus DNA. The heterodinuclear compounds ((bpy){sub 2}Ru(bpt)Os(bpy){sub 2})(PF{sub 6}){sub 3} (RuOs) and ((bpy){sub 2}Os(bpt)Ru(bpy){sub 2})(PF{sub 6}){sub 3} (OsRu), where Hbpt = 3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole and bpy = 2,2{prime}-bipyridine, have been prepared and characterized. The crystal and molecular structures of ((Ru(bpy){sub 2}){sub 2}(bpt))(CF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}){sub 3}{center dot}4H{sub 2}O and ((bpy){sub 2}Ru(bpt)Os(bpy){sub 2})(CF{sub 3}SO{sub 3}){sub 3}{center dot}4H{sub 2}O have been determined. Only one of the two possible geometrical isomers of the ruthenium dinuclear compound was found in the crystal structure. The two metal centers are coordinated via N(1) and N(4) of the triazole ring. Synthesis and characterization of reduced ternary molybdenum oxides and soluble copper (III) alkoxide complexes

This research work involves both solid state and solution chemistry. In the area of solid state chemistry, a number of exciting reduced ternary molybdenum oxides containing both discrete oligomeric cluster units (K{sub 3}Mo{sub 14}O{sub 22} (1) and BaMo{sub 5}O{sub 8} (2)) and infinite metal-metal bonded chains (KMo{sub 4}O{sub 6} (3) and Sr{sub 0.62}Mo{sub 4}O{sub 6} (4)) were discovered. Compound 1 contains discrete oligomeric units of three trans-edge-shared Mo{sub 6} octahedra interconnected by Mo-O-Mo bonding to form chains along the monoclinic c-axis.
