A comparison of iterative methods as applied to the solution of the nonlinear three-dimensional groundwater flow equation

This paper compares the efficiency of seventeen different methods for the solution of the simultaneous nonlinear finite difference approximating equations for groundwater flow in a watertable aquifer in three dimensions. Solution methods include those of Newton, Picard, and generalized linear methods. The Newton and Picard iteration methods were implemented by making use of several different linear methods including successive overrelaxation, the strongly implicit procedure, and eight different preconditioned conjugate gradient methods. The best methods were found to be those using Picard iteration implemented with the preconditioned conjugate gradient method.

This paper summarizes and highlights results from articles that describe the construction, verification, calibration, validation, and demonstration of two groundwater flow and contaminant transport models: A Finite Element Model of Water Flow through Aquifers (FEWA) and A Finite Element Model of Material Transport through Aquifers (FEMA). The construction is based on the finite element approximation of partial differential equations of groundwater flow for FEWA and solute transport for FEMA. The effect of Pneumatic Fracturing when applied to groundwater aquifers

Pneumatic Fracturing, an innovative in-situ treatment technology, was originally developed as a process to enhance remediation of the vadose zone. Recent application to saturated zones has provided evidence that the process can also effectively enhance remediation of saturated zones. The characteristics that are changed include an aquifer`s transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity and relative storage function. Additional data and observations indicate that Pneumatic Fracturing also lessens the effects of heterogeneities making them more isotropic. The impact of the aquifer framework on groundwater flow in the Dakota aquifer of Kansas

The movement of water and dissolved solids in the Dakota aquifer is affected by the distribution and degree of interconnection of the discontinuous sandstone aquifers in the formations that constitute the aquifer in Kansas. In Kansas, the Dakota aquifer framework consists of the nonmarine to paralic to marine sequences of interbedded thin sandstones, shales, siltstones, and thick channel sandstones. The spatial arrangement of aquifers and confining beds can be determined from an understanding of the depositional history of unconformity bounded stratigraphic sequences. Use of aquifer stratigraphy for building numerical models of groundwater flow: Case study of the heterogeneous Gulf Coast Aquifer in Matagorda and Wharton Counties, Texas

Deterministic models of groundwater flow require assigned values of hydrological properties. Assigning hydraulic properties on the basis of spatial stratigraphic variables such as sand-bed thickness allows hydrologic properties to be continuously distributed for simulation of aquifer heterogeneity. Aquifer stratigraphy, hydrologic properties, and groundwater availability are complexly interrelated in the heterogeneous Gulf Coast aquifer. The aquifer is made of a coastward-thickening wedge of Pliocene and Pleistocene formations deposited in fluvial meander-belt, fluvio-deltaic, and wave-dominated delta systems.
