Epitaxial rutile-structured single-crystal MnxTi1-xO2-δ films were synthesized on rutile- (110) and -(001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The films were characterized by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (ACTEM). Under the present conditions, 400oC and PO2 = 20 mTorr, single crystal epitaxial thin films were grown for x = 0.13, where x is the nominal average mole fraction of Mn. The temperature dependent resistivity and thermo-electric power of Cr-N codoped TiO2 were compared with that of single element N and Cr doped and undoped TiO2 using epitaxial anatase thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on (100) LaAlO3 substrates. The resistivity plots and especially the thermoelectric power data confirm that codoping is not a simple sum of single element doping. However, the negative sign of the Seebeck coefficient indicates electron dominated transport independent of doping. Epitaxial -Al2O3 thin films were grown on diverse substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The high quality of epitaxial growth and cubic structure of -Al2O3 films was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. SrTiO3 and MgO single crystal substrates were used to optimize the growth conditions for epitaxial -Al2O3 film. Under the optimized conditions, epitaxial -Al2O3 thin films were grown on flexible, single-crystal-like, metallic templates. Compositionally-graded (Ba{sub 1-x}Sr{sub x})TiO{sub 3} (BST) epitaxial thin films (with x decreasing from 0.25 to 0.0) were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on (100)LaAlO{sub 3} (LAO) single-crystal substrates covered with a conductive La{sub 0.5}Sr{sub 0.5}CoO{sub 3} (LSCO) layer as a bottom electrode. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns demonstrate that the entire graded film has a single-crystal cubic structure.
