The surfaces of metal oxides often are reconstructed with a geometry and composition that is considerably different from a simple termination of the bulk. Such structures can also be viewed as ultrathin films, epitaxed on a substrate. Here, the reconstructions of the SrTiO₃ (110) surface are studied combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), transmission electron diffraction, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and analyzed with density functional theory calculations. Al rich (111) and (110) surfaces of LaAlO₃

Lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO₃) has garnered significant interests since the discovery of a 2D electron gas at the LaAlO₃/SrTiO₃ interface. Here in this work, the (110) surface of LaAlO₃ was studied using a combination of transmission electron microscopy plan and profile imaging, image simulation, electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Profile imaging of the (110) surface was performed on a (111) oriented single crystalline sample with an Al rich surface. Charge induced (1[times]3) reconstruction of the Au(110) surface: An x-ray scattering study

[ital In] [ital situ] x-ray scattering studies of the Au(110) electrode surface have been carried out in 0.1[ital M] NaF, NaCl, NaBr, LiCl, CsCl, and HClO[sub 4] solutions under potential control. At sufficiently negative potentials, in the salt solutions the surface forms a (1[times]3) reconstruction rather than a (1[times]2) reported for the clean vacuum surface. Above a critical threshold potential, the (1[times]3) reconstruction vanishes and the surface forms a (1[times]1) structure.
