Investigation of superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system PrPt4Ge12-xSbx

Title: Investigation of superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system ${PrPt}_{4} {Ge}_{12 - x} {Sb}_{x}$

Abstract

We report a study of the superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system PrPt₄Ge_{12 - x} Sb_x. Polycrystalline samples with Sb concentrations up to x = 5 were synthesized and investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. We observed a suppression of superconductivity with increasing Sb substitution up to x = 4 , above which no signature of superconductivity was observed down to 140 mK. The Sommerfeld coefficient, γ , of superconducting specimens decreases with increasing x up to x = 3 , suggesting that superconductivity may depend on the density of electronic states in this system. Finally, the specific heat for x = 0.5 exhibits an exponential temperature dependence in the superconducting state, reminiscent of a nodeless superconducting energy gap. Here we observed evidence for a weak “rattling” mode associated with the Pr ions, characterized by an Einstein temperature Θ_E ~ 60 K for 0 ≤ x ≤ 5 ; however, the rattling mode may not play any role in suppressing superconductivity.

The superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system Pr_1-xEu_xPt₄Ge₁₂ were studied. Polycrystalline samples were investigated via x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific-heat measurements. Upon Eu substitution, we observed a crossover from superconducting to antiferromagnetic states with a region where both states coexist. Here, in the superconducting region, the specific-heat data exhibit a change of temperature dependence, suggesting an evolution from a nodal to a nodeless superconducting energy gap or a suppression of multiband superconductivity. This change is relatively slower than those reported for different substituent ions, suggesting that paramagnetic impurities have a weaker pair-breaking effect on unconventionalmore »« less

Studies of superconductivity in multiband correlated electronic systems have become one of the central topics in condensed-matter and materials physics. In this paper, we present the results of thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite system Pr_1-xCe_xPt₄Ge₁₂ ( 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 ) to investigate how substitution of Ce at Pr sites affects superconductivity. We find that an increase in Ce concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature from T c ~ 7.9 K for x = 0 to T c ~ 0.6 K for x = 0.14 . Electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements were performed on polycrystalline samples of the filled-skutterudite systems La_1-xM_xPt₄Ge₁₂ (M = Ce, Th). Superconductivity in LaPt4Ge12 was quickly suppressed with Ce substitution and no evidence for superconductivity was found down to 1.1 K for x > 0.2. Temperature-dependent specific heat data at low temperatures for La_1-xCe_xPt₄Ge₁₂ show a change from power-law to exponential behavior, which may be an indication for multi-band superconductivity in LaPt₄Ge₁₂. A similar crossover was observed in the Pr_1-xCe_xPt₄Ge₁₂ system. Here, controlled pointlike disorder introduced by 2.5-MeV electron irradiation was used to probe the superconducting state of single crystals of CaK(Fe_1–xNi_x)₄As₄ superconductor at x = 0 and 0.05 doping levels. Both compositions show an increase of the residual resistivity and a decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, T_c, at the rate of dT_c/dρ(T_c) ≈ 0.19 K/(μΩcm) for x = 0 and 0.38 K/(μΩcm) for x = 0.05, respectively. Layered LnOBiS₂ (where Ln represents a lanthanide element) compounds with Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Yb can be rendered conducting and superconducting via two routes, substitution of F for O or the tetravalent ions Ti, Zr, Hf, and Th for trivalent Ln ions. Electrical resistivity measurements on nonfluorinated La_0.80Ti_0.20OBiS₂ and La_0.85Th_0.15OBiS₂ superconductors were performed between ~1.5 and 300 K and under pressure up to 2.4 GPa.
