Plasma wakefield accelerators have been used to accelerate electron and positron particle beams with gradients that are orders of magnitude larger than those achieved in conventional accelerators. In addition to being accelerated by the plasma wakefield, the beam particles also experience strong transverse forces that may disrupt the beam quality. Hollow plasma channels have been proposed as a technique for generating accelerating fields without transverse forces. The extraction of accelerated positrons from the electron-beam-driven nonlinear plasma wakefield is investigated. If the trailing positron beam traverses a plasma density down-ramp at the exit of the plasma, it can become ring-shaped due to the defocusing force of the elongating wake bubble produced by the electron drive bunch. Ionization-induced head erosion process can be used to mitigate this effect because the drive electron beam leaves a hollow plasma channel with zero focusing force along the propagation axis. Plasma wakefield acceleration of positron beams in the wake of a dense electron beam (in the blowout regime) is numerically analyzed. The acceleration is possible only if the energy content of the wakefield is not very high. This is in contrast to electron acceleration, for which the optimum performance requires driver currents and wave energies to be as high as possible. We propose a novel positron beam loading regime in a hollow plasma channel that can efficiently accelerate e⁺ beam with a high gradient and narrow energy spread. In this regime, the e⁺ beam coincides with the drive e^- beam in time and space and their net current distribution determines the plasma wakefields. By precisely shaping the beam current profile and loading phase according to explicit expressions, three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations show that the acceleration for e⁺ beam of ~ nC charge with ~ GV / m gradient, ≲ 0.5% induced energy spread, and ~ 50 % energy transfer efficiency canmore »« less
