In this study, we generalize the impulse response approach and Poisson statistics proposed by Smith [Phys. Rev. B 64, 155106 (2001)] to evaluate the longitudinal and transverse magneto-optical conductivities in an electron gas system in Faraday geometry. Comparing with the standard Drude model, the coefficients a{sub n} are introduced in the Drude-Smith formula to describe the backscattering or localization effect for the nth electronic scattering event. Such a formula can also be applied to study the elements of the dielectric function matrix in the presence of magnetic and radiation fields in electron gas systems. Classical generalization of the Drude formula for the optical conductivity

A simple classical generalization of the Drude formula is derived based on the impulse response approach and Poisson statistics. The new feature is a parameter c, which is a measure of persistence of velocity. With negative values of c, it is possible to mimic the infrared properties of poor metals that display a minimum in the optical conductivity at zero frequency. The electron current in these cases reverses direction before decaying to zero. Specific examples considered are Hg and its amalgams, liquid Te, and the quasicrystal Al{sub 63.5}Cu{sub 24.5}Fe{sub 12}. Renormalization of the Drude conductivity by the electron-phonon interaction

It is commonly believed that the Drude conductivity is not renormalized by many-body interactions. To the contrary, we show that for impure metals the Drude conductivity is decreased by a temperature-dependent factor proportional to the electron-phonon coupling {lambda}. We demonstrate this effect by both the linear response and the quantum transport approaches. This effect, while comparable to the bare Drude conductivity, will be masked by the large temperature dependence of electron-phonon scattering. Signatures of Electron-boson Coupling in the Half-metallic Ferromagnet Mn5Ge3: Study of Electron Self-energy Sigma(w) Obtained from Infrared Spectroscopy

We report results of our infrared and optical spectroscopy study of a half-metallic ferromagnet Mn{sub 5}Ge{sub 3}. This compound is currently being investigated as a potential injector of spin-polarized currents into germanium. Infrared measurements have been performed over a broad frequency (70-50000 cm{sup -1}) and temperature (10-300 K) range. From the complex optical conductivity {sigma}({omega}), we extract the electron self-energy {Sigma}({omega}). The calculation of {Sigma}({omega}) is based on numerical algorithms for solution of systems of nonlinear equations.
