A spectrograph is an optical instrument that disperses photons of different energies into distinct directions and space locations and that images photon spectra on a position-sensitive detector. Spectrographs consist of collimating, angular dispersive, and focusing optical elements. Bragg reflecting crystals arranged in an asymmetric scattering geometry can be used as the dispersing elements in the hard-x-ray regime. A ray-transfer matrix technique is applied to propagate x-rays through the optical elements. Several optical designs of hard-x-ray spectrographs are proposed and their performance is analyzed. High throughput non-dispersive hard x-ray spectrograph with angular resolution for cosmic bursts, transients, and sources

A concept for a high throughput spectrometer for the 35-150 keV band is described. The energy resolution is only a factor of 2 to 4 inferior to germanium detectors, while the effective area is much larger. An effective area of 10/sup 3/ cm/sup 2/ per unit should be easily attainable and 10/sup 4/ cm/sup 2/ does not seem to be unreasonable. Minimal shielding, no cooling, and no external guard counters are needed, making the instrument rather light weight for its effective area. Hard-x-ray spectroscopy relies on a suite of modem techniques for studies of vibrational, electronic, and magnetic excitations in condensed matter. At present, the energy resolution of these techniques can be improved only by decreasing the spectral window of the involved optics-monochromators arid analyzers- thereby sacrificing the intensity. Here, we demonstrate hard-x-ray spectroscopy with greatly improved energy resolution without narrowing the spectral window by adapting principles of spectrographic imaging to the hard-x-ray regime. Ultrafast inorganic scintillator-based front imager for Gigahertz Hard X-ray imaging

State-of-the art X-ray imaging cameras using silicon sensors for X-ray detection have demonstrated a frame-rate of 10 MHz and excellent performance for X-ray energies below 20 keV. We proposed a pixelated ultrafast inorganic scintillator-based front imager for GHz hard X-ray imaging. Here, the proposed imager is featured with a total absorption for hard X-ray photons, and provides sub-ns scintillation pulse width crucial for X-ray bunches of a few ns spacing foreseen at the proposed MaRIE facility.
