We examine possible vacuum states for scalar fields in de Sitter space, concentrating on those states (1) invariant under the de Sitter group O(1,4) or (2) invariant under one of its maximal subgroups E(3). For massive fields there is a one-complex-parameter family of de Sitter-invariant states, which includes the ''Euclidean'' vacuum state as a special case. We show these states are generated from the Euclidean vacuum by a frequency-independent Bogoliubov transformation, and obtain formulas for the symmetric, antisymmetric, and Feynman functions. A theory of free and interacting massless fields is constructed in static de Sitter space and also in the conic de Sitter space containing a straight-line cosmic string. Vacuum-polarization effects and dynamical symmetry breaking are studied.
Smooth transitions from the Schwarzschild vacuum to de Sitter space

We provide an infinity of spacetimes which contain part of both the Schwarzschild vacuum and de Sitter space. The transition, which occurs below the Schwarzschild event horizon, involves only boundary surfaces (no surface layers). An explicit example is given in which the weak and strong energy conditions are satisfied everywhere (except in the de Sitter section) and the dominant energy condition is violated only in the vicinity of the boundary to the Schwarzschild section. The singularity is avoided by way of a change in topology in accord with a theorem due to Borde.

Conformally Coupled Scalars, Instantons, and Vacuum Instability in 4D Anti-de Sitter Space

We show that a scalar field conformally coupled to AdS gravity in four dimensions with a quartic self-interaction can be embedded into M theory. The holographic effective potential is exactly calculated, allowing us to study nonperturbatively the stability of AdS{sub 4} in the presence of the conformally coupled scalar. It is shown that there exists a one-parameter family of conformal scalar boundary conditions for which the boundary theory has an unstable vacuum.
