Electroweak baryogenesis is an attractive mechanism to generate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via a strong first order electroweak phase transition. We compare the phase transition patterns suggested by the vacuum structure at the critical temperatures, at which local minima are degenerate, with those obtained from computing the probability for nucleation via tunneling through the barrier separating local minima. Heuristically, nucleation becomes difficult if the barrier between the local minima is too high, or if the distance (in field space) between the minima is too large. Electroweak supersymmetry with an approximate U(1) Peccei-Quinn symmetry

A predictive framework for supersymmetry at the TeV scale is presented, which incorporates the Ciafaloni-Pomarol mechanism for the dynamical determination of the {mu} parameter. The {mu} parameter of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) is replaced by {lambda}S, where S is a singlet field, leading to a Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry. The axion becomes a heavy pseudoscalar, G, by adding a mass, m{sub G}, by hand. The explicit breaking of PQ symmetry is assumed to be sufficiently weak at the TeV scale that the only observable consequence is the mass m{sub G}. Loop corrections to radiative breaking of electroweak symmetry in supersymmetry

One-loop corrections to the radiative breaking of electroweak symmetry in supergravity unified models are analyzed. It is shown that in a physically interesting domain of parameter space there is a large cancellation among the contributions of the first two generations of squarks and the three generations of sleptons to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) equations. Partial cancellations in other sectors are also found. These cancellations reduce the effect of the one-loop contributions to the VEV equations.

Electroweak phase transition in supersymmetry

The electroweak phase transition in supersymmetric models is studied, analyzing the constraint on the Higgs-boson mass coming from the condition that the cosmic baryon asymmetry is not washed out soon after the phase transition. It is found that, in the minimal supersymmetric model, baryo-genesis at the weak scale requires a Higgs boson lighter than about 50--55 GeV, as in the standard model. This result holds true also when the one-loop radiative corrections, which are important for a heavy top quark, are taken into account.
