Photogalvanic Effects in Heteropolar Nanotubes

We show that an electrical shift current is generated when electrons are photoexcited from the valence to conduction bands on a BN nanotube. This photocurrent follows the light pulse envelope and its symmetry is controlled by the atomic structure of the nanotube. We find that the shift current has an intrinsic quantum mechanical signature in which the chiral index of the tube determines the direction of the current along the tube axis. Nonlinear Electron Transport Effects in a Chiral Carbon Nanotube

We present a novel, general, semiclassical theory of electron transport in a carbon nanotube exposed to an external electric field. The charge carriers are treated in the framework of the simplified tight-binding model. Simultaneous exposure to rapidly oscillating (ac) and constant (dc) electric fields is considered to exemplify our theory. Nonlinear and chiral effects are found, and their interaction is delineated. In this paper it is experimentally demonstrated that the electron-spin/molecular-handedness interaction plays a fundamental role in the chiral recognition process. This conclusion is inferred comparing current versus potential (I-V) curves recorded using chiral electrode surfaces, which are obtained via chemisorption of an enantiopure thiophene derivative: 3,3'-bibenzothiophene core functionalized with 2,2'-bithiophene wings (BT₂T₄). Electronic many-body correlation effects in one-dimensional (1D) systems such as carbon nanotubes have been predicted to strongly modify the nature of photoexcited states. In this work we directly probe this effect using broadband elastic light scattering from individual suspended carbon nanotubes under electrostatic gating conditions. We observe significant shifts in optical transition energies, as well as line broadening, as the carrier density is increased. These effects demonstrate the role of screening of many-body electronic interactions on the different length scales, a feature inherent to quasi-1D systems.
