The irreversible behaviour of a highly confined non-Brownian suspension of spherical particles at low Reynolds number in a Newtonian fluid is studied experimentally and numerically. In the experiment, the suspension is confined in a thin rectangular channel that prevents complete particle overlap in the narrow dimension and is subjected to an oscillatory pressure-driven flow. Parallel O(N) Stokes’ solver towards scalable Brownian dynamics of hydrodynamically interacting objects in general geometries

An efficient parallel Stokes’s solver is developed towards the complete inclusion of hydrodynamic interactions of Brownian particles in any geometry. A Langevin description of the particle dynamics is adopted, where the long-range interactions are included using a Green’s function formalism. We present a scalable parallel computational approach, where the general geometry Stokeslet is calculated following a matrix-free algorithm using the General geometry Ewald-like method. Our approach employs a highly-efficient iterative finite element Stokes’ solver for the accurate treatment of long-range hydrodynamic interactions within arbitrary confined geometries. Thermalization of a Brownian particle via coupling to low-dimensional chaos

It is shown that a paradigm of classical statistical mechanics---the thermalization of a Brownian particle---has a low-dimensional, deterministic analog: When a heavy, slow system is coupled to fast, deterministic chaos, the resultant forces drive the slow degrees of freedom toward a state of statistical equilibrium with the fast degrees. This illustrates how concepts useful in statistical mechanics may apply in situations where low-dimensional chaos exists.

Quantum chaos in the Brownian SYK model with large finite N: OTOCs and tripartite information

We consider the Brownian SYK model of N interacting Majorana fermions, with random couplings that are taken to vary independently at each time. We study the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) of arbitrary observables and the Rényi-2 tripartite information of the unitary evolution operator, which were proposed as diagnostic tools for quantum chaos and scrambling, respectively. We show that their averaged dynamics can be studied as a quench problem at imaginary times in a model of N qudits, where the Hamiltonian displays site-permutational symmetry.
