Andreev reflection spectroscopy with unpolarized and highly spin-polarized currents has been utilized to study an intermetallic single-crystal superconductor NiBi3. Magnetoresistance at zero bias voltage of point contacts shows the occurrence and suppression of Andreev reflection by unpolarized and polarized current, respectively. The gap value, its symmetry and temperature dependence have been determined using an unpolarized current. The spin state in the NiBi3 sample is determined to be antiparallel using a highly spin-polarized current. The gap value 2Δ/k B T, gap symmetry and its temperature dependence, combined with the antiparallel spin state show that the bulk NiBi3 is a singlet s-wavemore » superconductor.« less

Measurements of fluctuation-induced diamagnetism above the superconducting transition in YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]] single crystals in low magnetic fields: Comparison with paraconductivity

The so-called mean-field-like region will correspond to, approximately, 10[sup [minus]2][approx lt][var epsilon][approx lt]0.15. Beyond the lower [var epsilon] limit, closer to [ital T][sub [ital C][ital O]], both the paraconductivity and [Delta][chi][sub [ital a][ital b]]([var epsilon]) separate from the mean-field region behavior. Although so close to the transition we cannot exclude the influence of small stoichiometric inhomogeneities, these data for [var epsilon][approx lt]10[sup [minus]2] may be explained on the grounds of the three-dimensional [ital XY] model, with a critical exponent of [ital x]=[minus]1/3 for the paraconductivity and [ital x]=[minus]2/3 for the fluctuation-induced diamagnetism. Periodic fluctuation of Ba/Nd ratio in single crystals of high-J{sub c} NdBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} superconductor

A single crystal of NdBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} was synthesized by the Top Seeded Solution Growth method (TSSG method). Then, the crystal was heat-treated 500{degree}C for 400 h and then 340{degree}C for 200 h in a pure oxygen gas flow. This sample showed critical current density (J{sub c}) as high as 15,000 A/cm{sup 2} under a magnetic field of 5 T, applied along the c-axis of the crystal. Electron microscopic studies with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) have revealed that the Ba/Nd ratio fluctuates between 2.0 and 0.7 with a wave length of a few tens of nanometer. Gaussian fluctuations have been observed in the specific heat of two single crystals YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7/..sqrt../sub delta/. Deviations from a BCS-type step are well accounted for by 3D Gaussian fluctuations whose amplitude ratio, in the cleaner sample, implies that the number of order-parameter components is 7 +- 2. This result is inconsistent with an O(2) Ginzburg-Landau theory
