Using inelastic neutron scattering we show that upon cooling, ZnV{sub 2}O{sub 4}, a geometrically frustrated cubic antiferromagnet, undergoes a phase transition from a three-dimensional (3D) spin liquid to a one-dimensional (1D) spin chain system. This is evidenced by the change observed at 50 K in the Q-lineshape of the inelastic powder neutron scattering intensity from symmetric to asymmetric that .ts well to the powder-averaged structure factor of 1D spin chains. Searching for nontoxic and stable perovskite-like alternatives to lead-based halide perovskites for photovoltaic application is one urgent issue in photoelectricity science. Such exploration inevitably requires an effective method to accurately control both the crystalline and electronic structures. This work applies high pressure to narrow the band gap of perovskite-like organometal halide, [NH₃-(CH₂)₄-NH₃]CuCl₄ (DABCuCl4), through the crystalline-structure tuning. The band gap keeps decreasing below ~12 GPa, involving the shrinkage and distortion of CuCl₄^2–. Large Band Gap Narrowing and Prolonged Carrier Lifetime of (C₄H₉NH₃)₂PbI₄ under High Pressure

Due to their superior optical and electronic properties and good stability, 2D organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) exhibit strong potential for optoelectronic applications. However, the large band gap, short carrier lifetime, and high resistance hinder their practical performance. In this work, the band gap is successfully tuned, the carrier lifetime is prolonged, and the resistance of (C₄H₉NH₃)₂PbI₄ (BA₂PbI₄)is reduced directly using high pressure. The band gap is decreased to less than 1 eV at 35.0 GPa, and the highest pressure is studied. The carrier lifetime at 9.9 GPa is 20 times longer than that at ambient conditions. Nonmonotonic evolution of out-of-plane resistivity with Pr doping in Y{sub 1{minus}x}Pr{sub x}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} single crystals

In-plane ({rho}{sub ab}) and out-of-plane ({rho}{sub c}) resistivities of Y{sub 1{minus}x}Pr{sub x}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} have been determined using the electrical contact configuration of the dc flux transformer. {rho}{sub c}(x) varies nonmonotonically with x: {rho}{sub c}(x) increases at low x, reaches a maximum at x{approx}0.42, and then decreases for higher values of x. In contrast, {rho}{sub ab}(x) increases monotonically with x. These results, along with the coexistence of metallic {rho}{sub ab} and semiconducting {rho}{sub c}, are consistent with the presence of a gap in the energy spectrum of the CuO chains, leading to tunneling through both valence and conduction bandsmore »« less
