Because nucleons are closely packed in medium-to-heavy nuclei, one expects to observe density-dependent effects in their structure. Such effects can be seen in the nucleon momentum distribution in the form of a significant high-momentum tail related to the short-range interaction between nucleons, generating high-momentum short-range correlations (SRCs). High nuclear densities also imply overlap between neighboring nucleons, leading to the possible modification of their internal quark structure, which may contribute to the EMC effect. Background: The density of the nucleus has been important in explaining the nuclear dependence of the quark distributions, also known as the EMC effect, as well as the presence of high-momentum nucleons arising from short-range correlations (SRCs). High-momentum components of the nuclear wave function: Short range correlations, EMC effect, and the tensor parts of the N-N interaction

The combination of inclusive and exclusive electron scattering data from JLab in kinematic regimes that were not reachable before, together with the analysis and interpretation of older data from hadronic reactions at BNL is finally revealing the details of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlations in nuclei. The most significant result is the demonstration of the dominance of correlated np pairs over pp and nn pairs. I will review these results, discuss them in terms of short-range tensor-force dominance and also discuss the connection to the EMC effect.

Short-range correlations and the nuclear EMC effect in deuterium and helium-3

The EMC effect in deuterium and helium-3 is studied using a convolution formalism that allows isolating the impact of high-momentum nucleons in short-ranged correlated (SRC) pairs. We assume that the modification of the structure function of bound nucleons is given by a universal (i.e. nucleus independent) function of their virtuality, and find that the effect of such modifications is dominated by nucleons in SRC pairs. This SRC-dominance of nucleon modifications is observed despite the fact that the bulk of the nuclear inelastic scattering cross-section comes from interacting with low-momentum nucleons. Do Short-Range Correlations Cause the Nuclear EMC Effect in the Deuteron?

The relative contributions to the valence nuclear European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect in the deuteron arising from nucleon off-shell effects and Fermi motion are examined in models which include nuclear binding and off-shell effects. Contrary to expectations, the effect of Fermi motion overwhelms the off-shell effects for nucleons in short-range correlations (SRCs), calling into question the hypothesized causal connection between SRCs and the EMC effect.
