This paper explores properties of baryons and finite density baryonic matter in an artificial world in which N{sub c}, the number of colors, is large and the quarks of all species are degenerate and much larger than {Lambda}{sub QCD}. It has long been known that in large N{sub c} quantum chromodynamics (QCD), baryons composed entirely of heavy quarks are accurately described in the mean-field approximation. However, the detailed properties of baryons in the combined large N{sub c} and heavy-quark limits have not been fully explored. Solving two-dimensional large-N QCD with a nonzero density of baryons and arbitrary quark mass

We solve two-dimensional large-N QCD in the presence of a nonzero baryon number B, and for arbitrary quark mass m and volume L. We fully treat the dynamics of the gluonic zero modes and check how this affects results from previous studies of the B=0 and B=1 systems. For a finite density of baryons, and for any m>0, we find that the ground state contains a baryon crystal with expectation values for <{psi}{gamma}{sub {mu}}{psi}> that have a helixlike spatial structure. Mass formula for strange baryons in large N{sub c} QCD versus quark model

A previous work establishing a connection between a quark model, with relativistic kinematics and a Y-confinement plus one gluon exchange, and the 1/N{sub c} expansion mass formula is extended to strange baryons. Both methods predict values for the SU(3)-breaking mass terms which are in good agreement with each other. Strange and nonstrange baryons are shown to exhibit Regge trajectories with an equal slope, but with an intercept depending on the strangeness. Both approaches agree on the value of the slope and of the intercept, and on the existence of a single good quantum number labeling the baryons within a givenmore » Regge trajectory.« less

Baryonic mass formula in large N{sub c} QCD versus quark model
