Here, we report on the epitaxial strain-driven electronic and antiferromagnetic modulations of a pseudospin-half square lattice realized in superlattices of (SrIrO₃)₁/(SrTiO₃)1. With increasing compressive strain, we find the low-temperature insulating behavior to be strongly suppressed with a corresponding systematic reduction of both the Néel temperature and the staggered moment. However, despite such a suppression, the system remains weakly insulating above the Néel transition. The emergence of metallicity is observed under large compressive strain but only at temperature far above the Néel transition. Thermal fluctuations of ferroelectric nanodomains in a ferroelectric-dielectric ${PbTiO}_{3} / {SrTiO}_{3}$ superlattice

Ferroelectric/dielectric superlattices consisting of alternating layers of ferroelectric PbTiO₃ and dielectric SrTiO₃ exhibit a disordered striped nanodomain pattern, with characteristic length scales of 6 nm for the domain periodicity and 30 nm for the in-plane coherence of the domain pattern. Spatial disorder in the domain pattern gives rise to coherent hard x-ray scattering patterns exhibiting intensity speckles. We show here that using variable-temperature Bragg-geometry x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) that x-ray scattering patterns from the disordered domains exhibit a continuous temporal decorrelation due to spontaneous domain fluctuations. Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions near Optimal Superconductivity in ${{BaFe}_{2} ({As}_{1 - x} P_{x})}_{2}$

We use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution x-ray, and neutron scattering studies to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in phosphorus-doped BaFe2(As1-xPx)(2). Previous transport, NMR, specific heat, and magnetic penetration depth measurements have provided compelling evidence for the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) near optimal superconductivity at x = 0.3. However, we show that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural (T-s) and paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AF, T-N) transitions in BaFe2(As1-xPx)(2) are always coupled and approach T-N approximate to T-s >= T-c (approximate to 29 K) for x = 0.29 before vanishing abruptly for x >= 0.3. Tuning Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy by Oxygen Octahedral Rotations in $({La}_{1 - x} {Sr}_{x} {MnO}_{3}) / ({SrIrO}_{3})$ Superlattices

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) plays a critical role in the development of spintronics, thereby demanding new strategies to control PMA. Here we demonstrate a conceptually new type of interface induced PMA that is controlled by oxygen octahedral rotation. In superlattices comprised of La1-xSrxMnO3 and SrIrO3, we find that all superlattices (0<=x<=1) exhibit ferromagnetism despite the fact that La1-xSrxMnO3 is antiferromagnetic for x>0.5. PMA as high as 4×10^6 erg/cm^3 is observed by increasing x and attributed to a decrease of oxygen octahedral rotation at interfaces.
