Energy dispersive spectrometry line scan and ac impedance spectroscopy were used in this study to investigate the chemical reactions between two cathode materials, La{sub 0.84}Sr{sub 0.16} MnO{sub 3} (LSM), La{sub 0.5}Sr{sub 0.5}CoO{sub 3{minus}{delta}} (LSC), and the electrolyte La{sub 0.9}Sr{sub 0.1}Ga{sub 0.8}Mg{sub 0.2}O{sub 2.85} (LSGM). Significant interdiffusions of Co into LSGM and Ga into LSC were found at an LSC/LSGM interface even at relatively low fabrication temperatures. In contrast, only small interdiffusion of Mn into LSGM and Ga into LSM were detected at the LSM/LSGM interface even though it was fired at 1,470 C. Magnetism in La1-xSrxCoO3 as a function of doping is investigated with x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dicrhoism at the O K edge, and corresponding first principles electronic structure calculations. For small x, the spectra are consistent with the formation of ferromagnetic clusters occurring within a nonmagnetic insulating matrix. Sr-induced, magnetic O-hole states form just above EF and grow with increasing Sr doping. Density functional calculations for x=0 yield a nonmagnetic ground state with the observed rhombohedral distortion and indicates that doping introduces holes at the Fermi level in magnetic states with significant O 2p and Co t2g charactermore »« less

Sr- and Ni-doped LaCoO{sub 3} and LaFeO{sub 3} perovskites: New cathode materials for solid-oxide fuel cells

An improved cathode material for a solid-oxide fuel cell would be a mixed electronic and oxide-ion conductor with a good catalytic activity for oxygen reduction at an operating temperature T{sub op} {le} 700 C and a thermal expansion matched to that of the electrolyte and interconnect. The authors report on the properties of Sr- and Ni-doped LaCoO{sub 3} and LaFeO{sub 3} perovskites that meet these criteria. Single-phase regions were determined by X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were used to obtain the temperatures above which oxygen loss, and hence oxide-ion conductivity, occurs.
