We analyze the effects of flavor splitting from staggered fermion lattice simulations of a low-energy effective theory for graphene. Both the unimproved action and the tadpole-improved action with a Naik term show significant flavor-symmetry breaking in the spectrum of the Dirac operator. Note that this is true even in the vicinity of the second-order phase transition point where it has been argued that the flavor-symmetry breaking should be small due to the continuum limit being approached. Improved staggered quark actions with reduced flavor symmetry violations for lattice QCD

We introduce a new class of actions for staggered quarks in lattice QCD which significantly reduce flavor symmetry violations in the pion mass spectrum. An action introduced by the MILC Collaboration for the same purpose is seen to be a special case. We discuss how such actions arise from a systematic attempt to reduce flavor symmetry violations in the weak coupling limit. Partial flavor symmetry restoration for chiral staggered fermions

We study the leading discretization errors for staggered fermions by first constructing the continuum effective Lagrangian, including terms of O(a{sup 2}), and then constructing the corresponding effective chiral Lagrangian. The terms of O(a{sup 2}) in the continuum effective Lagrangian completely break the SU(4) flavor symmetry down to the discrete subgroup respected by the lattice theory. We find, however, that the O(a{sup 2}) terms in the potential of the chiral Lagrangian maintain an SO(4) subgroup of SU(4). It follows that the leading discretization errors in the pion masses are SO(4) symmetric, implying three degeneracies within the seven lattice irreducible representations. Thesemore »« less

Improving the staggered quark action to reduce flavor symmetry violations

The authors investigate a class of actions for lattice QCD with staggered quarks aimed at reducing the flavor symmetry violations associated with using staggered fermions. These actions replace the gauge field link fields in the quark action with covariantly smeared fields. As such they are an extension of actions considered by the MILC collaboration. They show that such actions systematically reduce flavor symmetry violations in the weak coupling limit. Scaling behavior at the N{sub t}=6 chiral phase transition for 2-flavor lattice QCD with massless staggered quarks, and an irrelevant 4-fermion interaction

We have simulated lattice QCD with 2 flavors of massless staggered quarks. An irrelevant chiral 4-fermion interaction was added to the standard quark action to allow us to simulate at zero quark mass. Thermodynamics was studied on lattices of temporal extent 6. Clear evidence for a second order chiral transition was observed and the critical exponents {beta}{sub mag}, {delta}, {nu} and {gamma}{sub mag} were measured. These exponents do not agree with those expected by standard universality arguments. They are, however, consistent with tricritical behavior. The {pi} and {sigma} screening masses were measured and show clear evidence for chiral symmetry restorationmore » at this transition.« less
