We report first measurements of e⁺e^- pair production in the mass region 0.4 between 40 and 60 MeV/c. The absolute cross section of the excess depends weakly on centrality, while those from a theoretical model calculation incorporating an in-medium broadened ρ spectral function and radiation from a quark gluon plasma or hadronic cocktail contributions increase dramatically with an increasing number of participant nucleons. Model calculations of photon-photon interactions generated by the initial projectile and target nuclei describe the observed excess yields but fail to reproduce the pmore » $$\mathbb 2\atop{T}$$ distributions.« less

Measurement of prompt $ψ (2 S)$ to $J / ψ$ yield ratios in Pb-Pb and $p$ - $p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{N N}} = 2.76 TeV$

The ratio between the prompt ψ(2S) and J/ψ yields, reconstructed via their decays into μ⁺μ^-, is measured in Pb-Pb and p-p collisions at √s_NN=2.76 TeV. Likewise, the analysis is based on Pb-Pb and p-p data samples collected by CMS at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 150 μb^-1 and 5.4 pb^-1, respectively. The double ratio of measured yields (N_ψ(2S)/N_J/ψ)_Pb-Pb/(Nψ(2S)/N_J/ψ)_p-p is computed in three Pb-Pb collision centrality bins and two kinematic ranges: one at midrapidity, |y|<1.6, covering the transverse momentum range 6.5_T<30 GeV/c, and the other at forward rapidity, 1.6<|y|<2.4, extending to lower p_T values, 3_T<30 GeV/c. The relative modification of the prompt ψ(2S) and J/ψ yields from pp to PbPb collisions, at the center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, is presented. The analysis is based on pp and PbPb data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 28.0 pb^-1 and 464 μb^-1, respectively.
