Two problems related to alpha particle physics in magnetized target fusion (MTF) systems are briefly discussed. First, we evaluate the pressure and density of alpha particles under the assumption that they are perfectly confined and have a classical slowing-down distribution. It turns out that because of a comparatively low plasma temperature in MTF systems, the relative pressure and density of alpha particles are more than an order of magnitude less than in fusion reactors based on ITER-type tokamaks. We have investigated the theoretical feasibility of using fast /sub 3/He/sup + +/ ions, produced by ICRF minority heating, to simulate the behavior of fusion-produced /sub 4/He/sup + +/ ions in large fusion experiments. This proposed technique would allow the study of alpha-particle-like heating in near-term experiments, such as TFTR, JET, and JT-60, without the necessity of high levels of neutron production and the subsequent activation.
