One of the crucial questions of all actinide electronic structure determinations is the issue of 5f versus 6d character and the distribution of these components across the density of states. Here, a break-though experiment is discussed, which has allowed the direct determination of the U5f and U6d contributions to the unoccupied density of states (UDOS) in Uranium Dioxide. A novel Resonant Inverse Photoelectron (RIPES) and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) investigation of UO{sub 2} is presented. It is shown that the U5f and U6d components are isolated and identified unambiguously.

Resonant inverse photoemission of Bi/sub 2/Ca/sub 1+//sub x/Sr/sub 2-//sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8+//sub y/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-//sub x/, unoccupied oxygen states, and plasmons

Inverse photoemission studies of the unoccupied states of Bi/sub 2/Ca/sub 1+//sub x/Sr/sub 2-//sub x/Cu/sub 2/O/sub 8+//sub y/ and YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-//sub x/, with and without 10% Pb substitution for Bi, show a low density of states within 2 eV of the Fermi level and broad structures at 4, 9.6, and 12.6 eV that are associated with Bi 6p, Ca 3d, and Sr 4d empty state bands. Plasmon losses are observed via their radiative decay at photon energies of 15 and 21.2 eV. Separate measurement of the 5f_5/2 and 5f_7/2 unoccupied density of states of UO₂

Coupling High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection (HERFD) with electric dipole selection rules, the uranium 5f_5/2 and 5f_7/2 Unoccupied Densities of States (UDOS) have been determined in UF₄, UO₂ and UCd₁₁. Striking changes were observed between UF₄ (5f²) to UCd 11 (5f³), consistent with the Intermediate Coupling Model. Results for UO₂ were confirmed by Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy (BIS). This new approach can be a powerful tool for shedding light on the hidden mysteries of Actinides 5f-electrons properties.

Resonant photoelectron spectroscopy of Au{sub 2}{sup −} via a Feshbach state using high-resolution photoelectron imaging

Photodetachment cross sections are measured across the detachment threshold of Au{sub 2}{sup −} between 1.90 and 2.02 eV using a tunable laser. In addition to obtaining a more accurate electron affinity for Au{sub 2} (1.9393 ± 0.0003 eV), we observe eight resonances above the detachment threshold, corresponding to excitations from the vibrational levels of the Au{sub 2}{sup −} ground state (X {sup 2}Σ{sub u}{sup +}) to those of a metastable excited state of Au{sub 2}{sup −} (or Feshbach resonances) at an excitation energy of 1.9717 ± 0.0003 eV and a vibrational frequency of 129.1 ± 1.5 cm{sup −1}. We report a study of the electronic and vibrational structures of the gaseous uranium monoxide and dioxide molecules using high-resolution photoelectron imaging. Vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectra are obtained for both UO{sup −} and UO{sub 2}{sup −}. The spectra for UO{sub 2}{sup −} are consistent with, but much better resolved than a recent study using a magnetic-bottle photoelectron analyzer [W. L. Li et al., J. Chem. Phys. 140, 094306 (2014)]. The electron affinity (EA) of UO is reported for the first time as 1.1407(7) eV, whereas a much more accurate EA is obtained for UO{sub 2} as 1.1688(6) eV. The symmetricmore »« less
