We perform a comprehensive analysis of target mass corrections to spin-averaged structure functions and asymmetries at next-to-leading order. Several different prescriptions for target mass corrections are considered, including the operator product expansion, and various approximations to it, collinear factorization, and {xi}-scaling. We assess the impact of each of these on a number of observables, such as the neutron to proton F{sub 2} structure function ratio, and parity-violating electron scattering asymmetries for protons and deuterons which are sensitive to {gamma}Z interference effects. The corrections from higher order radiative and nuclear effects on the parity-violating deuteron asymmetry are also quantified.

Target mass corrections for the virtual photon structure functions to the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD

We investigate target mass effects in the unpolarized virtual photon structure functions F{sub 2}{sup {gamma}}(x,Q{sup 2},P{sup 2}) and F{sub L}{sup {gamma}}(x,Q{sup 2},P{sup 2}) in perturbative QCD for the kinematical region {lambda}{sup 2}<<P{sup 2}<<Q{sup 2}, where -Q{sup 2}(-P{sup 2}) is the mass squared of the probe (target) photon and {lambda} is the QCD scale parameter. We obtain the Nachtmann moments for the structure functions and then, by inverting the moments, we get the expressions in closed form for F{sub 2}{sup {gamma}}(x,Q{sup 2},P{sup 2}) up to the next-to-next-to-leading order and for F{sub L}{sup {gamma}}(x,Q{sup 2},P{sup 2}) up to the next-to-leading order, bothmore »« less

The longitudinal structure function {ital F}{sub {ital L}} at small {ital x} is a very direct probe of the gluon distribution. Studies have shown that measurements at the DESY {ital ep} collider HERA can distinguish various possible theoretical small-{ital x} behaviors. Phenomenological analyses to date have used leading-order expressions for the structure function. We use the recent {ital O}({alpha}{sub {ital s}}{sup 2}) calculation of Kazakov {ital et} {ital al}. to extend the analysis to next-to-leading order.
