In this method, data is acquired in the Fourier domain as randomly sampled, uncoupled, amplitudes and phases. Structure-factor amplitude reconstruction from serial femtosecond crystallography of two-dimensional membrane-protein crystals

Serial femtosecond crystallography of two-dimensional membrane-protein crystals at X-ray free-electron lasers has the potential to address the dynamics of functionally relevant large-scale motions, which can be sterically hindered in three-dimensional crystals and suppressed in cryocooled samples. In previous work, diffraction data limited to a two-dimensional reciprocal-space slice were evaluated and it was demonstrated that the low intensity of the diffraction signal can be overcome by collecting highly redundant data, thus enhancing the achievable resolution. Here, the application of a newly developed method to analyze diffraction data covering three reciprocal-space dimensions, extracting the reciprocal-space map of the structure-factor amplitudes, is presented.more »« less

Quantum oscillations of two-dimensional to two-dimensional tunneling in bilayer electron gases in tilted magnetic fields

We present a linear-response theory of magnetoquantum oscillations of tunneling conductance between two quasi-two-dimensional layers of electron gases in equilibrium in tilted magnetic fields. Charge-balanced (i.e., symmetric) and charge-imbalanced (i.e., asymmetric) layers are considered. While interlayer resonant tunneling occurs only between the Landau levels with the same quantum number in a purely perpendicular field (B{sub {perpendicular}}) in the growth direction, off-diagonal tunneling is induced by an additional in-plane field (B{sub {parallel}}) owing to the B{sub {parallel}}-induced relative displacement of the centroids of the harmonic (i.e., Landau) wave functions of the two layers. Crystallography of a two-dimensional binary crystal with local distortions

We have used computer simulations to study the effects of local distortions with given low symmetries on the structure factors and pair distribution functions of a two-dimensional binary crystal. The disorder leads to specific modulations of the diffuse scattering. In the case of clusters of such defects the diffuse scattering is distributed around the Bragg peaks. The length scales are found to be most directly identified by analysis of direct-space pair distribution functions. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
