The {beta}-delayed {gamma} and proton decay of {sup 23}Al has been studied with an alternative detector setup at the focal plane of the momentum achromat recoil separator MARS at Texas A and M University. We could detect protons down to an energy of 200 keV and determine the corresponding branching ratios. Low-energy ²³Al β-delayed proton decay and ²²Na destruction in novae

The radionuclide ²²Na is a target of γ-ray astronomy searches, predicted to be produced during thermonuclear runaways driving classical novae. The ²²Na (p, γ) ²³Mg reaction is the main destruction channel of ²²Na during a nova, hence, its rate is needed to accurately predict the ²²Na yield. However, experimental determinations of the resonance strengths have led to inconsistent results. We have studied the {beta}-decay of {sup 23}Al with a novel detector setup at the focal plane of the MARS separator at the Texas A and M University to resolve existing controversies about the proton intensities of the IAS in {sup 23}Mg and to determine the absolute proton branching ratios by combining our results to the latest {gamma}-decay data. Experimental technique, results and the relevance for nova nucleosynthesis are discussed.
