We show that charged black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime can undergo a third-order phase transition at a critical temperature in the presence of charged fermions. In the low temperature phase, a fraction of the charge is carried by a fermion fluid located a finite distance from the black hole. In the zero temperature limit, the black hole is no longer present and all charge is sourced by the fermions. The solutions exhibit the low temperature entropy density scaling s{approx}T{sup 2/z} anticipated from the emergent IR criticality of recently discussed electron stars.

Hadron-quark phase transition at nonzero isospin density: The effect of quark pairing

We compute the mixed phase of nuclear matter and 2SC matter for different temperatures and proton fractions. After showing that the symmetry energy of the 2SC phase is, to a good approximation, 3 times larger than the one of the normal quark phase, we discuss and compare all the properties of the mixed phase with a 2SC component or a normal quark matter component. Discontinuous metal-insulator transitions of correlated electrons at nonzero temperature: Effect of the shape of the density of states

We discuss the effect of the shape of the density of states (DOS) on the discontinuous metal-insulator transitions of the Mott-Hubbard type at nonzero temperature, within an approach proposed by us previously (cf. Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 728 (1987)). We analyze explicitly the influence of the DOS shape on the critical value {ital U}{sub {ital c}} of the transition at temperature {ital T}=0, as well as on the metal-insulator boundary line for {ital T}{gt}0. The role of variations in the DOS that determine the magnitude of the short-range Coulomb interaction, driving the transition, is explained in physical terms.

Fermion-density phase transitions in models with continuous breaking of the gauge and chiral symmetry groups

It is shown that the behavior of gauge models with spontaneous symmetry breaking depends, in the limit of high density of matter, on the relation between the constants of the interaction of the vector and spinor particles with the scalar fields. The existence of a density phase transition in the Weinberg model for compression of electrically neutral matter is possible only if the baryon and lepton charges of the substance are equal. (AIP)
Critical density of topological defects upon a continuous phase transition

Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we test the hypothesis that the density of corresponding topological defects has a universal value at the temperature of a continuous phase transition. We consider several simple two-dimensional models where domain walls, vortices, so-called Z{sub 2} vortices or their combinations are presented. These topological defects are relevant correspondingly to an Ising second-order phase transition, a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition and an explicit crossover. We compare results for square and triangular lattices as well as for the complicated situation when two types of defects are presented and two transitions occur separated in temperature.
