At large N{sub c}, cold nuclear matter is expected to form a crystal and thus spontaneously break translational symmetry. The description of chiral symmetry breaking and translational symmetry breaking can become intertwined. Here, the focus is on aspects of chiral symmetry breaking and its possible restoration that are by construction independent of the nature of translational symmetry breaking - namely spatial averages of chiral order parameters. Chiral-symmetry restoration at finite densities in Coulomb-gauge QCD

Using the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the Hartree-Fock approximation, we show that, within a potential model motivated by the QCD Hamiltonian in the Coulomb gauge, chiral symmetry is restored at finite densities. Two cases are studied: a delta-function potential and a linear confining potential. For the former case the phase diagram is obtained analytically, whereas for the latter case numerical techniques are used. The values of physical quantities calculated for the linear confining model are consistently smaller than the experimental ones indicating that a potential with additional short-range attraction is needed to describe the quark interaction in the high-density regime.

It is shown that at large N, is independent of the temperature in the confining phase. This implies that the temperature at which chiral symmetry is restored is larger than or equal to the critical temperature for deconfinement. First-order restoration of SU(N{sub f})xSU(N{sub f}) chiral symmetry with large N{sub f} and an electroweak phase transition

It has been argued by Pisarski and Wilczek that finite temperature restoration of SU(N{sub f})xSU(N{sub f}) chiral symmetry is first order for N{sub f}{>=}3. This type of chiral symmetry with large N{sub f} may appear in the Higgs sector if one considers models such as walking technicolor theories. We examine the first-order restoration of chiral symmetry from the point of view of the electroweak phase transition. The strength of the transition is estimated in a SU(2)xU(1) gauged linear sigma model by means of the finite temperature effective potential at one loop with the ring improvement. On chiral symmetry breaking in QCD/sub 2/(N/sub C/. -->. infinity)

We discuss the various phases of two-dimensional QCD/sub 2/(N/sub c/). In the weak-coupling regime (N/sub c/..-->..infinity, g/sup 2/N/sub C/ = const, and g/N/sub c/ = -(g/sup 2/N/sub c//(12..pi..))/sup 1//sup ///sup 2/. We also determine the other important vacuum characteristic: the gluon condensate which is equal to /N/sup 2//sub c/ = -(1/6)g/sup 2/N/sub c/. We explicitly show the absence of a chiral condensate in the strong-coupling regime (g>>m/sub q/), which is in agreement with the Coleman theorem.
