The use of an external transverse magnetic field to trigger and to control electron self-injection in laser- and particle-beam driven wakefield accelerators is examined analytically and through full-scale particle-in-cell simulations. A magnetic field can relax the injection threshold and can be used to control main output beam features such as charge, energy, and transverse dynamics in the ion channel associated with the plasma blowout. It is shown that this mechanism could be studied using state-of-the-art magnetic fields in next generation plasma accelerator experiments.

In the magnetically injected plasma (MIP) plasma opening switch (POS) presently under study for use on the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II (PBFA II), plasma is injected along an imposed poloidal field to control the position of the plasma. The magnetic field and the plasma density combine to make the Alfven velocity very high relative to the injection velocity of the plasma. In fact, the ration of these velocities, the Alfven-Mach number of the flow, ranges from 0.001 to 0.01. Laser-driven plasma-based accelerators: Wakefield excitation, channel guiding, and laser triggered particle injection

Plasma-based accelerators are discussed in which high-power short pulse lasers are the power source, suitably tailored plasma structures provide guiding of the laser beam and support large accelerating gradients, and an optical scheme is used to produce time-synchronized ultrashort electron bunches. From scaling laws laser requirements are obtained for development of compact high-energy accelerators. Simulation results of laser guiding and wakefield excitation in plasma channels, as well as laser-based injection of particles into a plasma wake, are presented. Details of the experimental program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on laser guiding, laser wakefield-based accelerators, and laser triggered injection are given.

Performance of magnetically injected plasma opening switches for the Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator 2 (PBFA 2)

Plasma opening switch experiments using a magnetically injected plasma have been in progress since October 1988. Plasma densities of 1 {times} 10{sup 12} to 2 {times} 10{sup 13} e/cm{sup 3} have been injected from the anode side into the 8 cm gap of the 20 ohm magnetically insulated transmission line of PBFA II using a slowly rising B{sub r,z} magnetic field. This field confines the azimuthally-uniform plasma to produce switches up to 30 cm in length. Four MIP geometries have been investigated to find a higher electrical impedance when the switch opens. Magnetically assisted self-injection and radiation generation for plasma-based acceleration

In this work, it is shown through analytical modeling and numerical simulations that external magnetic fields can relax the self-trapping thresholds in plasma-based accelerators. In addition, the transverse location where self-trapping occurs can be selected by adequate choice of the spatial profile of the external magnetic field. We also find that magnetic-field assisted self-injection can lead to the emission of betatron radiation at well-defined frequencies. This controlled injection technique could be explored using state-of-the-art magnetic fields in current/next generation plasma/laser wakefield accelerator experiments.
