We have calculated the nuclear symmetry energy E{sub sym}({rho}) up to densities of 4-5{rho}{sub 0} with the effects from the Brown-Rho (BR) and Ericson scalings with the in-medium mesons included. Using the V{sub lowk} low-momentum interaction with and without such scalings, the equations of state (EOSs) of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter have been calculated using a ring-diagram formalism where the particle-particle-hole-hole ring diagrams are included to all orders. The EOSs for symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter obtained with linear BR scaling are both overly stiff compared with the empirical constraints of Danielewicz et al. [Science 298, 1592 (2002)].more »« less

Temperature effects on the nuclear symmetry energy and symmetry free energy with an isospin and momentum dependent interaction

Within a self-consistent thermal model using an isospin and momentum dependent interaction (MDI) constrained by the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion collisions, we investigate the temperature dependence of the symmetry energy E{sub sym}({rho},T) and symmetry free energy F{sub sym}({rho},T) for hot, isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. It is shown that the symmetry energy E{sub sym}({rho},T) generally decreases with increasing temperature while the symmetry free energy F{sub sym}({rho},T) exhibits opposite temperature dependence. The decrement of the symmetry energy with temperature is essentially due to the decrement of the potential energy part of the symmetry energy with temperature. Nuclear matter symmetry energy from generalized polarizabilities: Dependences on momentum, isospin, density, and temperature

Symmetry energy terms from macroscopic mass formulas are investigated as generalized polarizabilities of nuclear matter. Besides the neutron-proton (n-p) symmetry energy, the spin-dependent symmetry energies and a scalar one are also defined. They depend on the nuclear densities ({rho}), neutron-proton asymmetry (b), temperature (T), and exchanged energy and momentum (q). Based on a standard expression for the generalized polarizabilities, a differential equation is proposed to constrain the dependence of the symmetry energy on the n-p asymmetry and on the density. The knowledge of the nuclear symmetry energy of hot neutron-rich matter is important for understanding the dynamical evolution of massive stars and the supernova explosion mechanisms. In particular, the electron capture rate on nuclei and/or free protons in presupernova explosions is especially sensitive to the symmetry energy at finite temperature.
