Effect of Uniaxial Strain on the Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in BaFe2As2

We report neutron scattering experiments probing the influence of uniaxial strain on both the magnetic and structural order parameters in the parent iron pnictide compound, BaFe{sub 2}As{sub 2}. Our data show that modest strain fields along the in-plane orthorhombic b axis can affect significant changes in phase behavior simultaneous to the removal of structural twinning effects. As a result, we demonstrate in BaFe{sub 2}As{sub 2} samples detwinned via uniaxial strain that the in-plane C{sub 4} symmetry is broken by both the structural lattice distortion and long-range spin ordering at temperatures far above the nominal (strain-free) phase transition temperatures. Structural and magnetic phase transitions near optimal superconductivity in BaFe₂(As_1-xP_x)₂

In this study, we use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high-resolution x-ray and neutron scattering to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in phosphorus-doped BaFe₂(As_1-xP_x)₂. Thus, previous transport, NMR, specific heat, and magnetic penetration depth measurements have provided compelling evidence for the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) near optimal superconductivity at x = 0.3. However, we show that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural (T_s) and paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic (AF, T_N) transitions in BaFe₂(As_1-xP_x)₂ are always coupled and approach to T_N ≈ T_s ≥ T_c (≈ 29 K) for x = 0.29 before vanishing abruptly for x ≥ 0.3. Uniaxial pressure effect on the magnetic ordered moment and transition temperatures in ${BaFe}_{2 - x} T_{x} {As}_{2}$ ( $T = Co, Ni$ )

In this paper, we use neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation to study the effect of in-plane uniaxial pressure on the antiferromagnetic (AF) orthorhombic phase in BaFe₂As₂ and its Co- and Ni-substituted members near optimal superconductivity. In the low-temperature AF ordered state, uniaxial pressure necessary to detwin the orthorhombic crystals also increases the magnetic ordered moment, reaching an 11% increase under 40 MPa for BaFe_1.9Co_0.1As₂, and a 15% increase for BaFe_1.915Ni_0.085As₂. We also observe an increase of the AF ordering temperature (T_N) of about 0.25 K/MPa in all compounds, consistent with density functional theory calculations that reveal better Fermi surfacemore »« less
