Single crystals of Fe{sub 1+x}Te{sub 1-y}Se{sub y} have been grown with a controlled Fe excess and Se doping, and the crystal structure has been refined for various compositions. The systematic investigation of magnetic and superconducting properties as a function of the structural parameters shows how the material can be driven into various ground states, depending on doping and the structural modifications. Our results prove that the occupation of the additional Fe site, Fe2, enhances the spin localization. Structural phase transitions of (Bi_1$$-$$xSb_x )₂(Te_1$$-$$y Se _y)₃ compounds under high pressure and the influence of the atomic radius on the compression processes of tetradymites

Recently, A₂B₃-type tetradymites have developed into a hot topic in physical and material research fields, where the A and B atoms represent V and VI group elements, respectively. In this study, in situ angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction measurements were performed on Bi₂Te₂Se, BiSbTeSe₂, and Sb₂Te₂Se tetradymites under high pressure. Bi₂Te₂Se transforms from a layered rhombohedral structure (phase I) into 7-fold monoclinic (phase II) and body-centered tetragonal (phase IV) structures at about 8.0 and 14.3 GPa, respectively, without an 8-fold monoclinic structure (phase III) similar to that in Bi₂Te₃. Structural phase transitions of robust insulating Bi{sub 1-x}La{sub x}Fe{sub 1-y}Ti{sub y}O{sub 3} multiferroics

In contrast to leaky BiFeO{sub 3}, of which two structural phase transitions of cycloidal modulated antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic and ferroelectric-paraelectric are observed below 850 °C, chemical co-substitution to form Bi{sub 1−x}La{sub x}Fe{sub 1−y}Ti{sub y}O{sub 3} ternary solid solution makes these multiferroic ceramics become robust insulating low dielectric loss and exhibit rich structural phase transitions. Phase separation in the iron chalcogenide superconductor Fe _1+y Te _x Se _1-x

We present direct evidence for phase separation and chemical inhomogeneity in Fe1+yTexSe1-x single crystals from scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) data. In STEM, images recorded using a high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) detector show characteristic nanometer-scale patterns of phase separation from the Z-dependent image contrast. The separation was observed both in non-superconducting samples with excess iron and in superconducting samples. Using EELS, we determined ~20% (or lower) fluctuation in Te concentration from the average local compositions by integrating the intensity of the Te-M4,5 edge.
