First-principles phonon and multiple-scattering electron-energy-loss-spectra studies of Cu(111) and Ag(111)

Parameter-free first-principles phonon calculations are used in conjunction with multiple-scattering electron-energy-loss calculations to reveal new localized modes on Cu(111) and Ag(111). The discovery of these [ital z]-polarized localized modes along [bar [Gamma]] [ital [bar M]] and [bar [Gamma]] [ital [bar K]] provides for the first time good agreement between theory and all the existing helium-atom-scattering and electron-energy-loss experimental results. The new results indicate that it is not necessary to evoke exotic models such as anomalous surface dynamical effects on these densely packed surfaces.

Bonding of noble metals to semiconductor surfaces: first-principles calculations of Cu and Ag on Si(111)

Understanding the bonding between noble metals and semiconductor surfaces is of fundamental importance in a wide range of technological applications including electronic devices and catalytic processes. Although it has been known for more than 40 years that the synthesis of methylchlorosilanes (direct process) is catalyzed by Cu atoms, a complete understanding of the role of the metal atoms in this process is still lacking. Structure of the ( radical 3 times radical 3 ) R 30 degree Ag/Si(111) surface from first-principles calculations

The structure of ({radical}3 {times} {radical}3 ) Ag/Si(111) is investigated using first-principles total-energy calculations. The lowest-energy configuration consists of a top layer of Ag atoms arranged as honeycomb chained trimers'' lying above a distorted missing top layer'' Si(111) substrate. We find that the honeycomb structure observed in scanning-tunneling-microscope images arises from the electronic charge density on an empty surface band near the Fermi level.

A First-Principles Quantum Transport Theory of the Enhanced Wind Force Driving Electromigration on Ag(111) Surfaces

Herein we examine the low bias electromigration wind force acting on quasi one-dimensional nanoscale features within the Landauer-B uttiker conduction picture. Ordinarily the electromigration force is calculated under the approximation that the non-equilibrium carrier distribution in the vicinity of a defect is the same as that in the bulk. However, this approximation is rooted in the assumption that atomic scale defects scatter all incident electrons weakly (just as electrons weakly and diusely scatter in the bulk).
