We investigate the long-term dynamics of spin textures prepared by cooling unmagnetized spinor gases of F=1 {sup 87}Rb to quantum degeneracy, observing domain coarsening and a strong dependence of the equilibration dynamics on the quadratic Zeeman shift q. For small values of |q|, the textures arrive at a configuration independent of the initial spin-state composition, characterized by large length-scale spin domains and the establishment of easy-axis (negative q) or easy-plane (positive q) magnetic anisotropy. Periodic spin textures in a degenerate F=1 {sup 87}Rb spinor Bose gas

We report on the spin textures produced by cooling unmagnetized {sup 87}Rb F=1 spinor gases into the regime of quantum degeneracy. At low temperatures, magnetized textures form that break translational symmetry and display short-range periodic magnetic order characterized by one- or two-dimensional spatial modulations with wavelengths much smaller than the extent of the quasi-two-dimensional degenerate gas. Spin textures produced upon cooling spin mixtures with a nonzero initial magnetic quadrupole moment also show ferromagnetic order that, at low temperature, coexists with the spatially modulated structure.

Magnetic field dependence of the dynamics of {sup 87}Rb spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

We experimentally studied the spin-dependent collision dynamics of {sup 87}Rb spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates confined in an optical trap. The condensed atoms were initially populated in the |F=2,m{sub F}=0> state, and their time evolutions in the trap were measured in the presence of external magnetic field strengths ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 G. The atom loss rate due to inelastic two-body collisions was found to be 1.4(2)x10{sup -13} cm{sup 3} s{sup -1}. Effects of thermal and quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram of a spin-1 {sup 87}Rb Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the effects of thermal and quantum fluctuations on the phase diagram of a spin-1 {sup 87}Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under the quadratic Zeeman effect. Due to the large ratio of spin-independent to spin-dependent interactions of {sup 87}Rb atoms, the effect of noncondensed atoms on the condensate is much more significant than that in scalar BECs. We find that the condensate and spontaneous magnetization emerge at different temperatures when the ground state is in the broken-axisymmetry phase. Dynamics of superionic Rb{sub 3}H(SeO{sub 4}){sub 2} single crystals studied by {sup 1}H and {sup 87}Rb spin-lattice relaxation

The {sup 1}H and {sup 87}Rb spin-lattice relaxation and spin-spin relaxation times in superionic Rb{sub 3}H(SeO{sub 4}){sub 2} single crystals grown by the slow evaporation method were measured over the temperature range 160-450 K. The temperature dependencies of the {sup 1}H T {sub 1}, T {sub 1} {sub {rho}} , and T {sub 2} are measured. In the ferroelastic phase, T {sub 1} differs from T {sub 1} {sub {rho}} , which is in turn different from T {sub 2}, although these three relaxation times converge to similar values near 410 K.
