The crystal structure of PrCoO{sub 3} has been studied with high-resolution neutron powder diffraction and pair-distribution-function analysis in the temperature range from 12-600 K. The compound has the orthorhombic (Pbnm) perovskite structure over the entire temperature range. The temperature dependence of the average Co-O bond length shows clear anomalies near 60 K and 200 K where anomalous temperature dependencies of thermal conductivity and magnetic susceptibility have been reported. The data show a constant intermediate-spin-state fraction within 60 < T < 200 K and excitation of high-spin-state Co(III) above 200 K.

Powder neutron diffraction study of phase transitions in and a phase diagram of (1-x)[Pb(Mg{sub 1/3}Nb{sub 2/3})O{sub 3}]-xPbTiO{sub 3}

Dielectric, piezoelectric resonance frequency, and powder neutron diffraction studies as a function of temperature have been performed on several compositions of (1-x)[Pb(Mg{sub 1/3}Nb{sub 2/3})O{sub 3}]-xPbTiO{sub 3} (PMN-xPT) ceramics in and outside the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region to investigate the phase transitions and phase stabilities in this mixed system. Anomalies in the temperature dependence of piezoelectric resonance frequency and dielectric constant are correlated with structural changes using Rietveld analysis of powder neutron diffraction data. The frequency dependent dielectric studies reveal relaxor ferroelectric behavior for x<0.35 and a normal ferroelectric behavior for x{>=}0.35. Synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction study of phase transition in weberite-type Nd{sub 3}NbO{sub 7} and La{sub 3}NbO{sub 7}

La{sub 3}NbO{sub 7} and Nd{sub 3}NbO{sub 7} are insulating compounds that have an orthorhombic weberite-type crystal structure and undergo a phase transition at about 360 and 450 K, respectively. The nature of the phase transitions was investigated via heat capacity measurements, synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments. It is here shown that above the phase transition temperature, the compounds possess a weberite-type structure described by space group Cmcm (No. 63). Below the phase transition, the high temperature phase transforms into a weberite-type structure with space group Pmcn (No. 62). Ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in the n=2 Aurivillius phase Bi{sub 3}Ti{sub 1.5}W{sub 0.5}O{sub 9}: A neutron powder diffraction study

The ferroelectric phase transition in the Aurivillius phase Bi{sub 3}Ti{sub 1.5}W{sub 0.5}O{sub 9} was studied by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction. Below the ferroelectric Curie temperature T{sub c}=735 deg. C, Bi{sub 3}Ti{sub 1.5}W{sub 0.5}O{sub 9} adopts the polar orthorhombic space group A2{sub 1}am. A direct transition to the nonpolar tetragonal space group I4/mmm is observed on passing through T{sub c}, with no evidence of an intermediate nonpolar orthorhombic Amam phase. Above 700 deg. C, Bi{sub 3}Ti{sub 1.5}W{sub 0.5}O{sub 9} is metrically 'tetragonal' (i.e., a=b, within experimental precision), however, the presence of weak supercell reflections indicates that the material remains crystallographically orthorhombicmore » below T{sub c}.« less
