Effects of acid deposition on forest phase I

Abstract

The deposition of acid rain on world forests has been of increasing concern for a number of years. Forests are an important resource in Canada, in 1983 a reported one in ten jobs depended on the forest sector. The principle acid-forming materials are the oxides of sulphur and nitrogen which result mainly from coal-fired power plants, the smelting and petrochemical industries, and the transportation sector. This report provides a critical review of research into the effects of acid deposition and air quality on forest productivity. 76 refs., 2 append., 16 tabs., 10 figs.
