Progress in the recovery operations at Three Mile Island Unit 2: an update
In Nuclear Safety, Vol. 25, No. 1 (January-February 1984), the authors provided a review and summary of the progress in the recovery from the aftermath of the accident at Three Mile Island Unit 2 on Mar. 28, 1979. This article presents an update of the recovery progress since the publication of the original article and covers the time period from fall 1983 to the present. Principal recovery activities are described, including efforts in preparation for defueling, decontamination and dose reduction, radioactive waste management, and associated environmental impacts. Occupational exposure to date is discussed and compared with revised Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff estimates of exposures likely to be incurred to complete the recovery. The recovery is still not expected to be completed prior to mid-1988. Future work to complete recovery is described, including the difficult tasks of defueling and decontamination of the highly contaminated reactor building basement.
