One of the challenges of analyzing convective cell properties is quick evolution of the individual convective cells. Cloud Mask from Micropulse Lidar

Lidar backscattered signal is a useful tool for identifying vertical cloud structure in the atmosphere in optically thin clouds. Cloud boundaries derived from lidar signals are a necessary input for popular ARM data products, such as the Active Remote Sensing of Clouds (ARSCL) product. An operational cloud boundary algorithm has been implemented for use with the ARM Micropulse Lidar (MPL) systems. In addition to retrieving cloud boundaries above 500 m, the value-added product (VAP) named Micropulse Lidar Cloud Mask (MPLCMASK) applies lidar-specific corrections (i.e., afterpulse, background, deadtime, and overlap)
Merged RWP-WACR-ARSCL Cloud Mask and Cloud Type

The Merged RWP-WACR-ARSCL Cloud Mask and Cloud Type PI Data Product combines the RWP calibrated radar reflectivity data with the WACR-ARSCL dataset to improve cloud mask in precipitating clouds and to provide cloud-type profile classification. WACR-ARSCL cloud profiles during substantial precipitation period where severe attenuation affects accuracy of WACR cloud-top detections were replaced with RWP profiles. The merged RWP-WACR-ARSCL cloud mask is then used to produce cloud-type profile classification. The cloud-type classification includes a total of seven cloud types: shallow cumulus, congestus, deep convective clouds, altocumulus, altostratus, cirrostratus and cirrus. Taranis is an end-to-end processing chain for radar data written in Python with C extension for computation performance. Features include: masking for quality control, specific differential phase (Kdp), attenuation correction for reflectivity factor (Z) and differential reflectivity (Zdr) in rain, and additional geophysical retrievals. Retrievals are mostly drawn from literature or open-source software when appropriate, and have been tested, tuned, and modified to work with one another cohesively rather than using isolated off-the-shelf algorithms.
