Abstract

While albedo line measurements were being made, oblique photos were taken from eye level (~1.8 m) of the position of each albedo measurement (i.e., at 5-meter intervals along the line). The photo numbers were recorded in a notebook and in the ASD notes documents (see the spectral albedo archive). The photos were subsequently renamed for archiving according to the following file naming convention: ‘salvo_[site]_line_oblique_[YYYYMMDD]_[pos]_[rep].JPG’, where [site] is the overall measurement site (‘arm’, ‘beo’, or ‘ice’); YYYYMMDD is the date of the measurement in AKDT (local time); [pos] is the position along the line in meters; and [rep] is the repetition number if repeat photographs were made. Oblique photos are available for almost every albedo measurement.

A field-portable spectroradiometer, referred to herein as an ‘ASD’, was used to make spatially-distributed spectral albedo (350 – 2500 nm) measurements on tundra and sea ice surfaces. A field-portable broadband (285 – 2800 nm) albedometer was used to make spatially distributed albedo measurements on tundra and sea ice surfaces. The albedometer consists of paired upward-looking and downward-looking pyranometers, which were both connected to a data logger. The instrument was mounted approximately 1 m above the surface using a tripod and was placed on a 1.4 m-long boom to minimize the impacts of shading from the operator and to observe surfaces undisturbed by footprints (see Appendix for photos of measurement setup and uncertainty assessment). Detailed transects of snow depths and related measurements were made with a magnaprobe along fixed lines in Utqiagvik, AK. The operator measures snow depth by plunging a rod with a sliding basket into the snow and pressing a trigger. At this point, the data logger records the distance between the tip of the rod and the height of the basket, the measurement number, the time, and the geographic location of the measurement. The physical structure of the snowpack is impacted by and impacts the exchange of energy with the atmosphere. Qualitative characterization of snowpack stratigraphy in snow pits provides context for what physical processes are changing the snow (e.g., melt, wind-packing, hoar formation). 36 snowpits were dug as part of the 2024 Snow Albedo Evolution (SALVO) field campaign. Spectral Albedo for the 2019 SALVO Campaign

The springtime, surface-albedo transition in the Alaskan Arctic and the forcings that determine the duration and nature of that transition are the focus of our Snow ALbedo eVOlution (SALVO I & II) campaign. The SALVO team are assessing the “whys” and “how longs” of the stages of the spring melt during which albedo values drop from 0.8 to 0.1, the largest and most significant change of the year. The near-shore location of the ARM NSA observatory makes this an ideal place to investigate these melt stages.
