Abstract

The San Francisco Bay Area's Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) conducted the study in 1981, collecting household and travel information by telephone from 6,209 households in the MTC's nine-county jurisdiction. The sample gave good geographic coverage and provided a good representation of the population groups in the Bay Area. The survey was primarily intended to measure weekday travel; however, the size of the weekend travel sample was sufficient to enable MTC to make inferences about weekend trip generation. Travel days in the sample were spread out evenly over the three-month interviewing period to eliminate seasonal bias.

The Bay Area Transportation Study (BATS) Commission collected data from 30,686 Bay Area households using a face-to-face, in-home survey for a regional travel study to better understand their transportation needs and preferences. These households represented about 2.1% of the 1,387,000 Bay Area households in 1965. All household members around five years old were asked to record their travel for one assigned travel day. Data from this survey were used in efforts to develop travel demand models from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s.

In 2000, the San Fransisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission launched its fifth travel survey effort in the nine-county Bay Area. More than 15,000 households participated. The survey was an activity-based travel survey that collected information on all in-home and out-of-home activities over a two-day period, including weekday and weekend pursuits. Like the 1990 survey, the 2000 Bay Area Travel Survey also included an additional sample of 3,000 households using Bay Area Rapid Transit.
