Abstract

This data set comprises cumulative ambient ice-nucleating particle (INP) concentrations measured at the U.S. Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Eastern North Atlantic (ENA) observatory on Graciosa Island, Azores (39.0916° N, 28.0257° W). Our INP data were generated using a combination of online instruments, the Portable Ice Nucleation Experiment chamber (PINE), and an offline assay instrument, the West Texas Cryogenic Refrigerator Applied to Freezing Test system (WT-CRAFT), for aerosol particle samples collected on polycarbonate filters (with 0.2-micron diameter pores).

Ice nucleating particle concentrations at Macquarie Island, 2017/8

These data list ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations active in the immersion freezing mode. Aerosol filters were collected during late March 2017 to March 2018 as part of the Macquarie Island Cloud and Radiation Experiment (MICRE), located at the Australian Antarctic Division's Macquarie Island station. Collections were made over alternating periods of 48 and 72 hours using open-faced polycarbonate filters that were approximately 4 m MSL, sited near the main AAD station on the island, at -54.4997 deg latitude and 158.9344 deg longitude. This data set contains ice nucleating particle (INP) measurements, using Colorado State University’s (CSU) Ice Spectrometer (IS) of samples collected during the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) field campaign. Samples were collected from five different media: aerosol filters, meltwater, ice cores, snow pits, and bulk sea water (BSW).
