Abstract

During the final year of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment, 16 trees were felled and processed during July 2009. The trees had been grown for 12 years in ambient or elevated CO2. Two data sets are reported. Leaf characteristics (leaf mass per unit area, leaf thickness, average leaf size, carbon and nitrogen concentrations) are reported for each 1-meter section of the tree crowns in data set "Canopy_subsamples.csv". The measurements were made on approximately 20 subsamples collected from each 1-meter section of the canopy. Wood dry mass, total tree height, basal area, total leaf mass and leaf area are reported in "Tree_harvest.csv", based on field measurements of fresh mass and dry mass to fresh mass ratio of subsamples. Height of 20 sweetgum trees in three rows of each of the plots in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment was measured each year of the experiment (1997-2009). The trees were exposed to ambient or elevated CO2. Tree height data contribute to the overall project objectives to determine the integrated response of a deciduous forest to elevated CO2. Average tree height per plot was used in allometric equations to calculate tree dry mass each year and to test whether there were effects of elevated CO2 on canopy development. Weather data are available for 1999-2007. There is an hourly (*wh*) and a daily (*wd*) file for each of the six plots (rings) on the FACE site, giving a total of 12 files for each year. The 2007 files will be updated as data become available. Daily statistics were calculated only for those variables with at least 12 good hourly values, and the calculation of daily statistics for the variables, PAR2m, PAR22m, and PYRAN, required 12 good daylight hours. Otherwise, the daily values were set to missing.

CO2 concentration data are available for 1999-2006. There is an hourly file for each year which contains elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations. The 2007 file will be updated as data become available. These data files include FACE site measurements of CO2 concentrationsfor rings 1, 2, 4, and 5.
