Energy used in the production and processing of materials and products represents a significant fraction of the overall energy footprint of the industrial sector. Solar technologies may provide suitable alternative to existing combustion technologies, but their relevance for industries in the United States has been largely unexplored at the necessary levels of spatial, temporal, and operational detail. To provide the first assessment of the technical opportunities for solar technologies to meet the demand for process heat in the United States, we first develop estimates of energy use by process temperature at the county and hourly resolutions for all manufacturing industries.more »« less

This presentation summarizes the first national analysis of opportunities for solar technologies to provide industrial process heat (IPH) in the United States. The industrial sector is a major end-user of energy and IPH constitutes a majority of industrial fuel energy. New disaggregations of IPH demands are made at the temporal, geographic, and operational levels. Solar heat generation by seven solar thermal technologies and PV-connected electrotechnologies are modeled using county solar resources and land availability and matched to relevant IPH demands. Industrial Process Heat Demand Characterization

This data set is an expansion of the facility-level process heat survey conducted by McMillan et al. 2015 https//doi.org/10.2172/1334495. Using the same methodology annual facility combustion energy use was calculated from emissions data reported to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program https//www.epa.gov/ghgreporting for 2010 to 2015. The resulting energy values in TJ total and by fuel type were further characterized by end use using data from U.S. Energy Information Administration 2010 Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey https//www.eia.gov/consumption/manufacturing/data/2010/ and by temperature range. The data set includes calculated GHG emissions in MMTCO2e by fuel type end use and temperature range.

Estimated industrial manufacturing agriculture construction and mining energy estimated by North American Industrial Classification System NAICS code county and fuel type for 2014. Additional disaggregation by end use e.g. machine drive process heating facility lighting is provided for manufacturing agriculture and mining industries.
