Abstract

This data package is a compilation of studies and raw datasets on root traits including root biomass, root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations organized by different root diameters, species, soil depth, and forest types in Puerto Rico. The attached zip file contains a Word document that describes metadata including the methods, the data sources and publications used in the synthesis, and information about the content of included CSV data files. Separate KMZ and csv files are attached with the collection locations.

With an objective of associating the distribution of roots in the soil profile with functional attributes related to phosphorus nutrition, 1-m cores were collected from sites in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, in February, 2019. The sampled sites were ridge and valley locations at El Verde and Icacos with soils that differ in parent material and phosphorus fertility. The purpose of this data was to generate a scientific article that describes the responses of tropical roots to a warming experiment and to the effect of two consecutive hurricanes in Puerto Rico (Yaffar et al. in review). (2022): "biomass.tif" is a 26-m resolution forest biomass (AGB) map for Puerto Rico derived from NASA G-LiHT lidar data and forest inventory data (FIA plots), in raster format. "input_multivariate_v2.shp" is a point shapefile with information on forest age, substrate, past land use, topographic wetness, slope, and precipitation, for each forest pixel. Hurricane Maria made landfall as a strong Category 4 storm in southeast Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2018. The powerful storm traversed the island in a northwesterly direction causing widespread destruction. This study focused on a rapid assessment of Hurricane Marias impact to Puerto Ricos forests. Calibrated and corrected Landsat 8 image composites for the entire island were generated using Google Earth Engine for a comparable pre-Maria and post-Maria time period that accounted for phenology.
