This data was collected to understand hydrological processes occurring in the East River Watershed, Colorado, which is part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area. Data includes instantaneous observed discharge using salt dillution and acoustic doppler velocimeter techniques, raw pressure transducer downloaded data, sub-hourly temperature as well as corrected water level and associated stream discharge and mean daily values. During the closeout session, members of the technical assistance team conveyed to the site how impressed they were at the thoroughness of the site's investigation and attempts at remediation. Team members were uniformly pleased at the skilled detection work to identify sources, make quick remediation decisions, and change course when a strategy did not work well. The technical assistance team also noted that, to their knowledge, this is the only DOE site at which a world-class scientist has had primary responsibility for the environmental restoration activities. Final CRADA Report for Small Business Voucher (SBV) Pilot Project with TreadStone Technologies, Inc. – Novel Coating for Fuel Cell Metal Bipolar Plates

Light-weight metal is the preferred material for bipolar plate in the automotive proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack. The challenge using metal bipolar plates is the high surface electrical contact resistance and the poor corrosion resistance in PEM fuel cell operation conditions. This SBV project involved specialized capabilities and expertise at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) supporting TreadStone Technologies, Inc. and included ex-situ and in-situ drive-cycle tests that incorporated coated metallic bipolar plates (LANL tasks) and analysis of the surface chemistry and microstructure of coatings on stainless steel substrates (ORNL tasks).

This CRADA will enable cooperation between Ohio State University (OSU) and a collective led by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), with the goal of facilitating the accelerated commercialization of OSU’s iron-based chemical looping process through advanced modeling and state-of-the-art optimization techniques. OSU will provide data for model development and validation, while NETL and collaborators through the Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems (IDAES) will develop advanced high-fidelity optimization-based system models. The project will use data collected primarily from OSU’s bench scale and sub pilot scale facilities and will be supplemented by data collected from the open literature.more »« less
