Ten years of global tropospheric data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts analyses were used to obtain a climatology of quasi-stationary waves and transient normal-mode Rossby waves. The data were split up into a mean annual cycle, reflecting the forced fields, and a transient part, containing the traveling waves. Vertically integrated diabatic heating rate estimates (H) calculated from 32 months of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts daily analyses (May 1985-December 1987) are determined as residuals of the thermodyanmic equation in pressure coordinates. Values for Global, distribution of H is compared with previous results and with outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) measurements. The most significant negative correlations between H and OLR occur for (1) tropical and northern hemisphere mid-latitude oceanic areas and for (2) zonal and hemispheric mean values for periods less than 90 days. The effects of sampling frequency on the first- and second-moment statistics of selected European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model variables are investigated in a simulation of perpetual July' with a diurnal cycle included and with surface and atmospheric fields saved at hourly intervals. Extended (180-day) high resolution (T106) perpetual January and July integrations of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model have been analyzed in terms of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the model's convective activity in the tropics. The model's outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is used as a surrogate for convective activity, consistent with similar studies based on satellite observations. This dataset provides hourly measurements of temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind, and sunlight at Ambient Weather and OttHydro stations across Baltimore city. These surface weather stations were deployed by the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC) Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (UIFL) project, funded by the Department of Energy (DOE).
