Abstract

The Ka-band ARM Zenith Radars (KAZRs) have replaced the long-serving Millimeter Cloud Radars, or MMCRs. Accordingly, the primary MMCR Value Added Product (VAP), the Active Remote Sensing of CLouds (ARSCL) product, is being replaced by a KAZR-based version, the KAZR-ARSCL VAP. KAZR-ARSCL provides cloud boundaries and best-estimate time-height fields of radar moments.

The Ka-band ARM Zenith Radar Active Remote Sensing of CLouds CloudSat-aligned (KAZRARSCL-CLOUDSAT) Value-Added Product (VAP) applies satellite-based reflectivity calibrations to KAZRARSCL data sets. The Navigation Best Estimate (NAVBE) VAP was developed in response to the 2012-2013 Marine ARM GPCI Investigation of Clouds (MAGIC) deployment, the first ship-based deployment of the second ARM Mobile Facility (AMF2). It has since been applied to the 2015 ARM Cloud Aerosol Precipitation EXperiment (ACAPEX) deployment. Data Product: Ka ARM Zenith Radar (KAZR), in CfRadial format: precipitation mode, corrected

The KAZRCFRCOR Value Added Product (VAP) performs several corrections to the ingested KAZR data and also creates a significant detection mask for each radar mode. The VAP computes gaseous attenuation as a function of time and radial distance from the radar antenna, based on ambient relative humidity, and corrects observed reflectivities for that effect. KAZR reflectivities are also corrected in the antenna ‘nearfield’ range to compensate for the near-field antenna pattern and gain. KAZRCFRCOR also dealiases mean Doppler velocities, to correct velocities whose magnitudes exceed the radar’s Nyquist velocity. This dataset contains the 'kazrpr' (precipitation) mode output from this VAP.
