  1. General Motors Corp., Detroit, MI (United States)
General Motors facilities are engaged in numerous pollution prevention activities and projects. GM has instituted pollution prevention, recyclability, and other manufacturing considerations into the design process of the vehicle. This approach is effective in reducing the total life-cycle impact of GM vehicles. For the purposes of this handbook, two broad-based initiatives that have applications outside of the automotive industry will be discussed. First, chemicals management is a new supplier relationship that reduces the overall chemical cost while providing incentives for the chemical supplier to find ways to reduce chemical usage. The second initiative, packaging reduction and recycling, has been a great success at many of GM`s facilities. The goal is to reduce the amount of packaging coming into a plant and to make sure that the packaging that is received is easily recycled or returned.
