Office operations provide excellent, and often overlooked, opportunities to prevent pollution. At most facilities, attention is directed toward reducing or eliminating hazardous materials and wastes from industrial or manufacturing operations. As a result, offices are often neglected as potential opportunities to reduce or recycle wastes. This chapter is appropriate for persons interested in pollution prevention for both large and small office operations. It provides suggestions that can be implemented in an isolated office located in a larger industrial facility or at a multistory office complex. The chapter begins by introducing the benefits of practicing pollution prevention in the office. The types of wastes produced from office operations are briefly described, followed by presentation of specific source reduction and recycling options. A discussion of using the purchasing process to reduce waste is also presented. Tips on how to establish a recycling program in the office conclude the chapter.
